Cites Eating Disorders as Motivations
By Cindy Lim
On the morning of January 3rd, 2014, famous 26-year-old singer and songwriter Ke$ha had checked into rehab for anorexia and bulimia.
When she entered the treatment center, Ke$ha, whose real name is Kesha Rose Sebert and is known for her hit singles “Tik Tok” and her most recent song “Timber” ft. Pitbull, announced to her fans via Facebook, "I'm a crusader for being yourself and loving yourself but I've found it hard to practice. I'll be unavailable for the next 30 days, seeking treatment for my eating disorder ... to learn to love myself again. Exactly as I am."
For several years, the singer had dealt with anorexia and bulimia, but kept it a secret from the public. Her statement received more than 40,000 likes within the first day, along with a string of consoling comments from her fans. Her checking into the treatment center had appeared shocking to some of her fans, considering that she is known for her self-confidence.
After she received a medical examination, her doctors reported Kesha had dangerously low blood pressure and sodium levels, practically as low as the levels of someone who has had a heart attack or stroke.
"They said it was a miracle that she didn't drop dead on stage," her mother, Pebe Sebert stated. In another statement, Sebert said that Kesha “nearly died of starvation” during the production of her “Timber” music video.
According to Kesha, her producer Lukasz Gottswald, also known as "Dr. Luke," had called her "a fat refrigerator"; this insult seemed to have been the catalyst of her anorexia and bullimia. However, Dr. Luke denied the alleged claims and "wishes Kesha the best on her healing journey." The singer was also previously bombarded with "fat" comments about her body after the media released unfavorable photos of her at the beach in 2011. Evidently, her producer's alleged comments seemed to worsen the situation.
About a week after Kesha checked herself in, her mother, Pebe Sebert, had also checked into the same treatment center for post-traumatic stress disorder, at Kesha's urging. According to Sebert, Kesha had asked her mother to "heal along with her." Sebert also blamed Dr. Luke for her PTSD due to his constant pressure on her daughter. Kesha and her mother are known to have a close-knit relationship, as seen on MTV's TV series Ke$ha: My Crazy Beautiful Life, which documents Kesha’s personal life.
The two are currently residing in Timberline Knolls, a Chicago treatment center that Demi Lovato had also stayed at in 2013, for a 30-day period. No further reports have been made yet about Kesha and her mother’s progress, but fans wish for the singer to heal and learn to love herself again on her journey to recovery.
